Church History

A Legacy of Faith
A Legacy of Faith and Community

Early Beginnings

Streetsville United Church began as a Methodist congregation, with its first building—a simple log structure—erected in 1821. Over the years, the church evolved to meet the needs of its growing community:

  • 1835
A frame building was constructed on Maiden Lane, overlooking the Credit River.
  • 1847
A brick church was built nearby, marking another step in the congregation’s journey.
  • 1875
The congregation had outgrown the third building. It was sold to the local school board for $800 and current property was purchased on Queen St. With the proceeds of the sale and $1,000 from the Ladies Aid, the congregation contracted in 1875 with builder Josiah Mason to erect a new church. With this move Streetsville United Church is now located on the Treaty Lands and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit.
  • 1876

The Sanctuary: A Victorian Gothic Gem

The Sanctuary, completed in 1876, is a stunning example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. Its carefully proportioned brickwork and intricate cut stone detailing are rare for Ontario village churches. While some features, such as the gargoyles and cast iron fence, have been lost over time, the building remains a testament to craftsmanship and dedication.

Key Features of the Sanctuary

Materials

• Locally sourced, including river stone foundations, handmade bricks, native pine woodwork, and Niagara Escarpment cut stone.

Interior

• Virtually unchanged since its construction, with cast iron pillars supporting the gallery and beautiful stained glass windows.

Cost: The total cost of construction (without furnishings) was $6,942.

A former minister, Rev Charles Fish, came forward and challenged the people to raise the balance owing that very day. They rose to the occasion and all the money was pledged.

The cornerstone was laid on July 1, 1875, and the building was dedicated on February 27, 1876, by Egerton Ryerson, a prominent figure with deep ties to Streetsville. His 75-minute sermon inspired the congregation, and the dedication day included three packed services and a banquet attended by 750 people.

Expanding for the Future

  • 1953

As the congregation continued to grow, so did the church’s facilities:

A $35,000 addition was completed, featuring Sunday School rooms, a kitchen, a minister’s study, and a choir room.
  • 1965
The Christian Education Wing was added, with an elevator installed in 1985 to improve accessibility.
  • 1994
Major repairs were undertaken, including repointing the Sanctuary brickwork and restoring the stained glass window at the rear of the sanctuary.

Modern Updates and Preservation

Streetsville United Church has continued to adapt and preserve its historic building for future generations.

  • 2003
A new Phoenix “digital pipe” organ was installed, enriching the church’s musical heritage.
  • 2008
Landscaping improvements were made to the Queen Street and Barry Street sides of the property.

Modern Updates and Preservation

  • 2009
The Sanctuary roof was replaced with 35-year shingles.
  • 2019
The flat roofs over the Christian Education Wing and Narthex were replaced, addressing water leakage issues.
